Reading and Viewing Check

4. Pearl Harbor- The twist ending would be how Alfred Preis was the man who designed the U.S.S. Arizona memorial even though he himself was one of the many victims who was locked up into a camp and treated horribly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Reading and Viewing Check

1. Lives Lost- Dotson uses stand up in the story to allow his audience to visualize what each of the girls did in their school gym. Dotson was in the school gym talking about the girls actions that us as viewers had to visualize. The techniques he used to get soundbites include the non-question question and the rule of threes.

2. Cave Rescue- My favorite line was the open when Dotson wrote, "Imagine slithering through a cave-a mile and a half long-climbing up a thousand foot maze dragging a broken leg," because I have broken my leg before and can't imagine doing that.

3. Ruby Bridges- Dotson uses setting by making sure he had all the correct camera shots. One that was a wide shot of the classroom, another of her feet, an third of her looking out the window and a fourth low angle shot of her face. He uses foreshadowing by mentioning the classroom as being a prison for Ruby and a picture that makes the room look like a prison is shown. Dotson uses conflict when talking about the huge crowd of people rioting in front of Ruby's school. He uses character growth by showing Ruby first as just a normal little six year old girl then how much she was forced to mature to everything bad that had affected her. Finally Dotson uses resolution by bring up how Ruby has been helping other kids out and the conflict has been resolved.

"Lives Lost"

An example from the story of the rules of three would be when Bob Dotson asks "What are you going to miss the most about these four people?" and Michael responds saying, "Nataile's smile... Personality... Always lending a helping hand."

1. Angela Johnson-Silence the Violence

Video Four
1. Ross Lundholm- Ross the Boss
2. He did a good job incorperating his slogan in his video.

Video Five
1. Mikayla Pullin-The Worst Mistakes Make the Best Memories

4. Her video was interesting and she did a good job finding a lot of different photos to use.
5. It was 30 seconds long.

Tiger Woods Reaction

After watching the video of Tiger Wood's speech I feel that I'm not really sure whether to believe what he is saying to be genuine or not. I question whether he even wrote the speech himself. As a fan I would feel very confused. I wouldn't know whether or not I could go back to cheering for him or if I should see his previous actions as too horrible to forgive. I do believe that everyone deserves forgiveness if they are worthy for it. As a reporter I can't help but question if he only gave his speech because his manager told him it would be necessary in order for him to be able to play again. I would also be wondering why now after so many months he finally decided to speak out.

I think it is extremely sad how much the newspaper industry has gone down through the years. I can however say that I believe it makes sense because in our day and age virtually everything can be done online. It only makes sense that people are beginning to soley read articles online or watch the news instead of buying a newspaper to read. It is also sad that finding a job in the newspaper industry would be near to impossible for college students since newspapers are going out of business and/or positions are being cut.

Thursday's Assignment

-The article I read was "Sharks kill man at Florida beach." I was shocked to read that a man who had simply decided to go kite-surfing was killed by multiple shark bites. I think that beaches should be more carefully monitored so people can be warned if there are sharks present near shore in the water. I was also very surprised to read that in a 2008 study over half of the shark attacks recorded worldwide occurred in Florida alone. That shows that Florida should be making changes so that shark attacks are far less in the years to come.

-The definition of Broadcast Journalism is airing news or current events instantaneously through television, radio, or the internet.

-News is an account of events that interest and concern the public

-SIX CRITERIA OF NEWS WORTHINESS:
1. Unusualness: News that is different or out of the ordinary, most often bad.
ex. A plane crashing into the ocean.
2. Significance: News that affects a lot of people making it important to be broadcasted.
ex. election results, wars, terrorist attacks
3. Timeliness: News that is current and happening right now.
ex. News on the War in Iraq
4. Proximity: News on things that are local, happening in a person's very own city or state.
ex. new state laws being passed
5. Prominence: News on well-known people, buildings, or places.
ex. The death of Michael Jackson
6. Human Interest: News on ordinary people or animals or heartwarming stories that appear in the news because they have an emotional and personal appeal that draws our attention.
ex. A dog being rescued by a family and given a new home.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRINT JOURNALISM AND BROADCAST JOURNALISM:
1. Print journalism offers better and more coverage on more stories than broadcast journalism does.
2. Print journalism allows people to pick and choose what stories they want to learn about and the order they learn about them where broadcast journalism only shows some stories and you might have to wait awhile to hear about a story you are interested in.
3. Broadcast journalism allows people to hear about news going on instantaneously where print journalism must wait until the following day or longer.
4. Broadcast journalism gives viewers much more dramatic news because they can use video clips where print journalism can just use pictures.
5. Broadcast journalism is often only major stories where print journalism has a large variety of stories that may not be very important but are interesting to some people.

ARTICLES THAT ARE EXAMPLES OF THE CRITERIA FOR NEWS WORTHINESS:
-Unusualness: Sharks kill man at Florida beach
-Significance: Dow tumbles 200 points
-Timeliness: Haiti: Behind Door No. 3, difficult questions await
-Proximity: Fox to televise nine Twins games
-Prominence: Brittany Murphy's death ruled accident from pneumonia, with prescription drugs a factor
-Human Interest: Cleo, the breakup kitten

USA Today Article Response

I read the article, "Planes With Maintenance Problems Have Flown Away." I was very surprised when I read that many major airlines have continued to fly planes even if there are maintanence problems known. I was also surprised how many fines the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has found against different US airlines for maintenance problems. For safety reasons I think that all airlines should be checking eveything themselves so the FAA does not find as many problems.

Partner Interview

Eric Hatzenbuhler is taking broadcast journalism because he is hoping to be a part of Eastview's Forecast and Flash student broadcasting programs. He is also taking it so he can have somewhat of a background knowledge before becoming his future dream job of a meteorologist. An activity that Eric enjoys is bowling and he even competes in a bowling league. He also enjoys snowboarding and he can play the piano. Something that is unique about Eric is that one of his thumbs is double jointed so he can easily move and bend his thumb in a way that most people find impossible.
